Our Camera Models Explained

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused or lost when shopping around for security cameras, you aren’t alone. There are many companies, each with a dizzying range of camera models to choose from, and that's before you factor in subscriptions, additional hardware, and cabling. We'll cover all of that in future posts. This one focuses on the cameras themselves.

Before picking a model, it's worth defining what you actually need. Think about what you're trying to protect or identify, where the camera will be mounted, and any physical limitations of that space. Keep that in mind as you read through the options below.

We’ve got 6 different camera models to choose from. Our preferred brand to use is Ubiquiti, a commercial and “prosumer” company that deals in hardware and software for networking applications. These cameras are wired, which has numerous benefits over wireless cameras.

Ubiquiti G5 Turret

G5 Turret Ultra

By far our most popular camera, the G5 Turret Ultra is a great blend of price and performance. Its horizontal field of view is 102.4°, making it ideal for capturing large spaces such as yards or offices or shallow spaces. A wider field of view also means you can potentially reduce the number of cameras you need, bringing the cost down.

This camera is feature-rich for outside use. It is IP66 weatherproof, IK04 tamper resistant and has got infrared (IR) night vision up to 30m.

Depending on your camera requirements, the G5 Turret Ultra has a couple of drawbacks. Firstly, it has a fixed focal length, meaning it doesn’t have any zoom functionality. Secondly, it can only be adjusted manually, it doesn’t automatically move and it can’t be moved remotely either.

Ubiquiti G6 PTZ

G6 PTZ

The G6 PTZ is the only camera in our lineup with pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, and it's a significant step up from previous PTZ models. It shoots in 4K with 10x hybrid zoom, 350 degree pan and 100 degree tilt, making it capable of covering areas that would be impossible for a fixed camera. Large carparks, driveways, acreage, or the corner of a building where you'd otherwise need multiple cameras are all well within its capabilities.

It comes with AI-powered active tracking, which locks onto a subject and follows them as they move through the frame. Once tracking ends, the G6 PTZ automatically returns to its preset home position, an improvement over earlier models that required manual repositioning. Additional AI features include face recognition, licence plate recognition, and smart detection of people, vehicles, and animals. Night vision reaches up to 30m. While this camera works in residential settings, it's usually overkill.

Ubiquiti G5 Bullet

G5 Bullet

The G5 Bullet is our lower priced, entry level model. It is a good camera for those who only need a basic camera but still want cables run to make future upgrades as easy as possible.

The Bullet has a 2K resolution, which provides a high quality image that captures a high amount of detail. Unfortunately, in order to do this, the field of view is significantly narrower than other cameras at only 84.4°.

While suitable for outdoor use, the Bullet is only IP55 rated so it is water resistant, not water proof. The IR night vision is up to 9m and some owners have reported poor night time performance.

This camera may suit you if you’re looking for an entry-level camera or a camera with a narrow field of view is favourable. Otherwise, we’d suggest the slightly more expensive Turret Ultra, which is significantly more feature rich for a small price difference.

Ubiquiti G5 Pro

G5 Pro

The G5 Pro is the highest-end camera in our lineup, boasting superior specs than the other models.

With the 3x optical zoom fully zoomed out, it’s got the widest field of view at 109.9° and 35° when fully zoomed in. This makes the Pro a strong camera when looking down pathways or a long driveway.

The G5 Pro comes with 25m IR night vision out of the box and be extended to 40m when combined with the additional G5 Pro Vision Enhancer, which adds a 600 lumen ring spotlight around the lens.

The G5 Pro is our most expensive camera and seeing as it’s packed with features, there’s a chance it’s overkill for most people’s use case. We’d be happy to recommend which camera from our lineup best meets your needs.

Ubiquiti G5 Flex

G5 Flex

The G5 Flex is the most compact in the lineup and offers a variety of mounting options. The included mounts are: desktop, wall, pole and hard-ceiling. The additional mounts are: in-ceiling, pendant and pro.

The Flex measures in at 48mm diameter and 107.5mm in height. This small form-factor combined with the different mounting options means the Flex is suitable for a lot of different mounting locations.

It isn’t as suitable for outdoor use if exposed, as it is only IPX4 weatherproof rated while covered.

If you really value subtlety, aesthetics and need a mounting option unique to the Flex, then this camera could be great for you. However, if these aren’t at the top of your list of requirements, the Turret Ultra is the more well-rounded camera for a similar price.

Ubiquiti G6 Dome

G6 Dome

The G6 Dome is a 4K camera built for both indoor and outdoor use, designed with discreet, low-profile installations in mind. Its flush, compact shape makes it less obtrusive than a turret camera, which is useful when you want coverage without drawing attention to the camera itself.

It carries a 109.9 degree horizontal field of view, making it effective in hallways, shallow rooms, and open spaces. IR night vision reaches 30m. Weatherproofing is rated IP66 and tamper resistance is IK10, the highest in our lineup, making it a solid choice for lower wall mounts or public-facing areas within reach.

AI features include face recognition, licence plate recognition, and smart detection of people, vehicles, and animals.

One thing to be aware of with dome cameras: the dome cover can cause IR reflections in wet conditions, which may affect night vision image quality. In locations regularly exposed to rain spray, this is worth factoring into your placement decision.

So, that’s a brief overview of each of our cameras. As you can tell, they’ve all got different features and are suitable for different setups. This is why before every installation we do, we talk with the customer to ensure we understand their needs and choose the cameras that will meet their requirements. Based on this, we provide a free estimate which includes cameras, cabling, labour, other hardware and fasteners.
