Which are better? Wired or Wireless Security Cameras
If you’re in the market for security cameras, you’ve probably gone down countless rabbit holes of different brands & models. A big difference between these models is whether they’re wired or wireless. If you’re left wondering which is better, then read on as we cover the pros and cons of both.
Wired Security Cameras
Wired security cameras are commonly PoE (power over ethernet), which requires only one cable running from the camera. Both power and data are sent through this one cable. The ethernet cable runs from the camera into an NVR (Network Video Recorder) and stores the footage there.
Pros
Reliability - These cameras are much more reliable due to the hard wired connection. This enables a stable transmission of power and data, which ensures constant surveillance and video recording, so your cameras never miss the important moments due to a loss of signal or a flat battery.
Higher quality - These cameras also often boast superior image quality & enhanced details as they can transmit the data quicker.
No signal issues - They avoid issues with wireless interference as they don’t rely on a Wi-Fi signal. This is particularly beneficial for larger properties or businesses with a large number of devices on the Wi-Fi.
Improved security - Wired cameras are less susceptible to cyber attacks and more immune to Wi-Fi jammers as they don’t rely on a Wi-Fi network.
Cons
Complex installation - The need to run cables throughout the house can result in a longer install & higher costs. This also makes the cameras more difficult to relocate. Moving the cameras within the premise is dependant on the reach of the cables, and moving the cameras to a new premise requires new cables to be run.
Cost - These cameras are more expensive than their wireless counter-parts and the installation costs are also higher due to the need to run cables.
Power dependant - These cameras require a constant power supply and without a power supply backup, are prone to stop working in the event of a power outage. This can lead to your premise being unmonitored for a duration of time.
Wireless Security Cameras
Wireless security cameras are a great way to dip your toes into the world of home security. These cameras transmit video & audio over a Wi-Fi or cellular network. Despite the name “wireless”, they still require a power source. For true wireless cameras, solar-powered or battery-powered cameras are the way to go. Otherwise, you’ll need a power cable running to the camera.
Pros
Easy installation - There are no cables to run through the walls, making installation and relocation a breeze. The installation for these is often DIY and ideal for renters or frequent movers. It’s also easy to move them to a different position to improve coverage, if desired.
Location flexibility - Without the need for cables, these cameras can often be placed in locations that would be difficult or impossible for a wired camera, such as away from the building or up high on a pole or wall.
Cost - These cameras are considerably cheaper than wired alternatives, which makes them popular for people who don’t need top of line features.
Cons
Dependant on Wi-Fi - The performance of these cameras fluctuate depending on the strength and stability of the Wi-Fi network it is on. Poor signal can lead to video dropouts or lower image quality. This could render footage unusable or non-existent.
Maintenance - With a lot of models relying on batteries, regular charging or replacement is required to keep them recording 24/7 for you. The ones that don’t have a battery need a power cable, completely negating the wireless advantage.
Vulnerable - Wireless cameras are more susceptible to a cyber attack & Wi-Fi jammers due to their use of the Wi-Fi network. The cameras could be attacked directly, or if another device on the Wi-Fi is hacked, the cameras are also at risk.
Is wired or wireless the way to go?
Wired security cameras would be the better option if:
You’re building or renovating a home, and running cables is convenient
You want a long term security setup that is future proof
You live on a rural property where Wi-Fi coverage is weaker
You want the highest level of security & reliability
Wireless security cameras would be more suited to you if:
You want a budget option to dip your toes in the world of security cameras & home security
You live in a rental, and running cables may not be possible
You want a DIY option that is quick and easy to install
